UN warning: by 2040 600 million children will experience water shortage

“To achieve universal access to water and sanitation, the current rate of progress needs to be 4 times higher,” said UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, speaking at the UN’s high-level meeting on the “2030 Agenda Goals and the Implementation of the Water Goals.” said.

Mohammed warned that the threats of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution in the world will increase water scarcity, emphasizing that by 2040, one in 4 children under the age of 18 will live in areas with extremely high water stress, corresponding to approximately 600 million in the world.

Noting that the new type of coronavirus (Kovid-19) epidemic reminds us of the importance of water and sanitation in combating diseases, Muhammed stated that 3 billion people in rural areas and underdeveloped countries still lack basic hand washing facilities.

Mohammed called on countries to invest in sustainable development goals for access to water and sanitation, take action on climate change and involve women in the decision-making process within the framework of their pandemic plans.
