Roycroft added that domestic rats accounted for 41 percent of all Australian mammals endangered since the start of European colonization in 1788:

“It’s exciting that the Gould’s rat is still around, but it has disappeared from the mainland. The fact that this species only survived on offshore islands in Western Australia rather than dispersal to Australia shows how rapidly the process has changed,” he said.
