State of Emergency is on the agenda until the end of summer in Japan: It includes the Olympics

According to the news of the Kyodo agency, which is based on government sources, the implementation of a state of emergency in the capital against the Covid-19 cases that have not decreased sufficiently is on the agenda again.

Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide held a press conference after meeting with Health Minister Tamura Norihisa and Cabinet Member for Covid-19 Measures Nişimura Yasutoshi.

Suga signaled a new state of emergency, saying, “The cases in Tokyo are on an upward trend. We will do our best to stop the spread of the epidemic.”

Referring to the course of the partial state of emergency that will end on July 11 in 10 states, including Tokyo and Osaka, Suga said that they will announce the decision on the possible declaration of a new state of emergency within the week.

According to Kyodo, government sources note that the new state of emergency will cover the Tokyo Olympics, which coincides with the period from July 23 to August 8, and will last until August 22.

Omi Şigeru, Head of the Covid-19 Advisory Board of the government, said that if the cases continue to rise, the health infrastructure may be strained during the Tokyo Games.

Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko also described the course of the case in the capital as “quite serious” and said they would step up efforts to organize the tournament safely.

If declared, it will be the fourth time that a state of emergency has been implemented in Tokyo since the beginning of 2020.

The Olympic Games, which were previously planned to be held on July 24 – August 9, 2020 and postponed due to the epidemic, were decided to be held on July 23 – August 8, 2021.
