Rising house rents protested in Germany


More than 1,500 people gathered in front of the city hall during the demonstration organized as part of “Housing Action Day 2021” in the capital city of Berlin.

Demonstrators carrying foreign currency and banners that read “Stop the rise of rents”, “Do not allow speculators”, “Let’s fight together against displacement and rent mania” and “To reside in a place is not a luxury, it is a basic right” until he walked.

Speeches at the demonstration were asked to review the housing policy of the Berlin state government to provide adequate housing for low-income and asylum seekers, to buy and expropriate the buildings from private companies, and to avoid discrimination in renting.

During the demonstration, intense security measures were taken.

Demonstrations with similar demands were also held in the cities of Hamburg, Cologne, Frankfurt, Leipzig and Potsdam.
