Pope Francis orders deductions from cardinals’ salaries

Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of the Catholics and the President of the Vatican, passed the action after the fall of Vatican revenues due to the new type of corona virus (Covid-19) outbreak. The Pope gave instructions for deductions from the salaries of cardinals and clergy, so that employees in the Vatican could continue their jobs.

In the statement made by the Vatican, it was stated that the Pope signed the decree on salary cuts to take effect on April 1. Accordingly, the salaries of cardinals will be cut by 10 percent, while the salaries of other clergymen will be cut by 3 percent to 8 percent. According to the decree, employees with low salaries will be exempt from deductions.

It was stated that the planned salary increases will be suspended until March 2023.

It is estimated that the salaries of cardinals are between 4-5 thousand euros.
