Number of marine species has halved due to climate change

Scientists have found that in tropical marine regions around the world, the total number of open water species has nearly halved in the 40 years to 2010. During this time, sea surface temperatures in the same regions rose by about 0.2 degrees Celsius.

“Climate change is already affecting the distribution of marine species diversity by making changes more pronounced in the Northern Hemisphere, where the water warms faster,” said Chhaya Chaudhary, a biogeographer at Goethe University, co-author of the study.
