In Portugal, the Constitutional Court found the euthanasia approved by parliament earlier this year unconstitutional. The decision was taken after Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa asked the court to reconsider the law in question. At a press conference, Judge Pedro Machete said the law was found unconstitutional on the grounds that it poses a threat to the principle of the right to life. In a previous statement, Sousa previously said that he respected parliament’s decision, but that the Constitutional Court had to reconsider the law.
Under the law passed by Parliament in early January, those over the age of 18 who suffered from a terminal illness or intolerable suffering could request euthanasia.
