THE ONLY EXAMPLE COLLECTORS CAN LEGALLY HAVE
The Double Eagle, which went up for auction, thus went down in history as the only example in which a private person could legally own it after a legal battle between the US Treasury and a former owner. The sale doubled the auction record for the coin, which sold for $7.6 million (approximately 65.2 million Turkish lira) in 2002.
On the other hand, it was stated that the coin is one of three valuable items offered for sale by shoe designer Stuart Weitzman. The other two were a stamp from a former British colony and a page of a US postage stamp printed with a unique error.
