According to national media reports, Koroma said in a statement that the government took action to abolish the death penalty in the country.

Koroma stated that the cabinet of Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio decided to abolish the death penalty in order to “protect the fundamental rights of citizens”.

Noting that no executions have been carried out in Sierra Leone since 1998, Koroma said death sentences are generally reduced.
