Geneva-based IOM announced on its Twitter account last night that there were reports of at least 100 irregular migrants killed in marine accidents in the Mediterranean.
IOM Spokesperson Safa Msehli answered questions about the accidents at a press conference held at the UN Geneva Office.
Msehli stated that at least 3 separate rubber boats carrying irregular migrants opened from Libya to the Mediterranean and one of these boats was turned away by the Libyan coast guard two days ago, but two people died in this boat.
Stating that the wreckage of the second rubber boat carrying 130 irregular immigrants was reached, Msehli noted that when the French non-governmental organization SOS, which participated in the search and rescue activities in the Mediterranean, arrived at the accident site, dozens of corpses were witnessed.
Msehli emphasized that the third rubber boat carrying 40 people was lost and she was worried about the loss of all irregular collapses in the boat.
DEATHS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN 3 TIMES INCREASED COMPARED TO THE LAST YEAR
Stating that they believed 172 irregular immigrants lost their lives in the accident that occurred in 3 rubber boats, Msehli criticized the countries that left their search and rescue calls unanswered without naming them.
Msehli pointed out that the number of irregular migrants who lost their lives in the Mediterranean increased 3 times this year compared to last year, and that the number of irregular migrants who lost their lives in the Mediterranean this year approached 500 with the latest accidents.
