Russia made a NOTAM announcement in the Black Sea due to the exercise that could affect flight and ground safety, and closed the Kerch Strait entrance, which is the only passage from the Black Sea to the Sea of ​​Azov, to maritime transport. Russia has banned the Ukrainian navy and third-country warships from approaching Crimea and crossing the Sea of ​​Azov. Merchant ships will be granted the right of passage to the Ukrainian port of Mariupol under Russian control.

With the decision of Russia’s NOTAM, which will last about 6 months from April 24 to October 31, Russia announced that it started naval exercises. According to the Russian Defense Ministry’s statement, 15 warships crossing the Black Sea waters from the Caspian with 6 ships connected to the Black Sea navy will begin their exercises in the closed sea areas in the coming days. 50 SU-27, SU-30, SU-24M, SU-34 and SU-25SMZ warplanes will support Russia’s naval exercises.


Reaction statements came from the USA, NATO and the EU to the NOTAM announcement that prevents Russia’s access to the Ukrainian coast. Stating that Russia’s decision prevents Ukraine’s sovereign rights and sea transportation, Russia was asked to withdraw its decision on closed sea areas.


A spy diplomat crisis was added to the tension between the two countries. The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced that Ukrainian Consul General Alexander Sosonyuk, who was in St. Petersburg, Russia, was arrested while purchasing secret military documents from a Russian citizen. The consul, who was detained for two hours and released, is expected to be deported within three days.
