Since the Y chromosome inherited by his male descendants can remain virtually unchanged for 25 generations, examining these genetic data in modern males of the da Vinci family could help confirm Leonardo’s own Y chromosome.

In addition, the researchers said that comparing biological data can help confirm the authenticity of works of art and materials supposedly made by da Vinci.

The full findings of the research have been published in the journal Human Evolution.
